A prom dress that actually fits.
Hems, take-ins, and strap work by independent seamstresses near you. Share your event date when you book, and see the quote before anything is sewn.
Off the rack is almost never your size.
Prom dresses are cut to a size chart, not to you. A hem that drags, a bodice that gaps, a strap that slips: these are quick fixes for the right seamstress, and they are the difference between a dress you tug at all night and one you forget you are wearing.
Search independent seamstresses near you who do formalwear, and book the one you choose. Your dress is pinned in person and the quote is written up before any work begins. You approve it before a stitch goes in. Most prom dresses need a single fitting.

Prom dress questions, answered.
-
How long do prom dress alterations take?
Most prom dresses need one fitting and a few days of work. Book two to three weeks before the dance if you can. Inside that window, ask anyway: many seamstresses keep room for a faster turnaround, and any rush fee is set by the seamstress and shown before you commit.
-
Can you make a dress smaller if it does not fit?
Usually, yes. Taking in the waist, sides, or bodice is routine formalwear work. How much smaller depends on the seam allowance, which your seamstress checks at the fitting and explains before sewing.
-
Can you shorten a long prom dress?
Yes. A hem is the most common prom request. For beaded or multi-layer hems the work takes a little longer, and your quote reflects that. Wear the shoes you plan to wear that night to the fitting so the length is exact.
-
My dress is too long and the straps slip. Can both be fixed?
Yes, and often in the same appointment. Hemming and strap adjustments are both standard. Your seamstress pins everything at once and writes a single quote for the work.
-
What does it cost?
Formalwear alterations start at $50 for common work like a hem, take-in, or strap adjustment. The final price is written at your fitting based on the actual work and fabric. A 5% booking fee is added to the seamstress's quote and appears on your invoice.
-
Who actually alters my dress?
An independent seamstress who runs their own studio and works on prom and formalwear. You see their experience, specialties, and reviews before you book.
